Ronald F. Gibson, Ph.D., is currently an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has held full-time faculty positions at Iowa State University, University of Idaho, and Wayne State University, as well as visiting faculty positions at Stanford University, University of Florida, and Michigan State University. His industrial/government experience includes a position as a development engineer for Union Carbide Corporation, Nuclear Division and a summer faculty fellowship at the NASA Langley Research Center. Widely published and highly decorated, Dr. Gibson is an elected fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society for Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, and American Society for Composites. He is also past president of the American Society for Composites, and a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Society for Experimental Mechanics.

This is a pretty informative book about composite materials. I needed it for class, and I thought it was very educational.

For starters, this is not a textbook-sized textbook. It's only about 9"x5", and it's problematic for a number of reasons. It won't stay open on it's own, which is an absolute pain when I'm doing work out of the book and having to constantly prop the thing open. Everything feels cramped together, which is psychologically off-putting.In addition, a lot of the way the book is structured is just weird. Recently had to compute an elastic modulus for shear for a laminate, and the textbook listed the suppositions for doing it as taken for non-laminate materials. It went through the entire process, but only after it was finished developing the formula did it give a proof for why the method was a poor approximation (not a hint that the process was bad at the start of the section), and then it did not give the proper procedure for several more sections. It was maddening.Finally, a lot of the explanations are very unclear, and the practice problems are poorly worded and difficult to understand. Some of them reference incorrect figures, and the entire thing is more difficult than it should be.Experience: Senior undergraduate ME student. I have some experience in good and bad textbooks.
