Joining a recent trend, this story addresses some dark subjects and, in my opinion, does it well. The dark subjects are sexual abuse of children and verbal abuse of same. Both Darcy and Elizabeth have been betrayed by and lost faith in the things they have been taught to honor and trust. The Bennet family disintegrates after Bingley's defection to London and Elizabeth's refusal of Collins and she is betrayed and disillusioned by her family and the values she has held. Darcy has had to face his limitations as a human being as he has been unable to protect Georgiana perfectly and when he seeks justice for her, it seems that the culprit's standing in the ton precludes any action whatsoever. Hence, all things pertaining to the ton, which he has been taught to honor and live in accordance with, are empty and his disillusionment with the ton is complete. This comes out as he and Elizabeth work through their hang ups and anger. Their play off each other helps the healing process within and the insights that free them from the misguided roles they have accepted and lived for most of their lives. Like another reviewer, I like very much the way it dawns on Elizabeth that she can love again and that she loves Darcy. Very touching. The Epilog is a bit of a surprise because bygones are not bygones, but there are consequences and they all aren't at Pemberley in one big happy group hug. This is life that is real and not some fantasized reality. Great book that I will re-read more than once. Highly recommend

The dark ambiance made this a deliciously emotional read.A chance encounter leaves a light at the end of the tunnel for our dear couple. Darcy found Elizabeth in dire circumstances, skittish like an unbroken foal. Georgiana's horrible revelations from the past had removed Darcy's faith in higher society. We follow them in an intense few days of revelations, brutal honesty and a generous amount of swoon-worthy tender loving moments.Deep and thoughtful, I absolutely loved it!

3.5 starsI applaud Ms Fairbanks for examining the darker side of relations and relationships than is usually seen in JAFF, and for examining mental illness. The problem in the book comes with Elizabeth being stabbed in the back by EVERYONE. Not almost everyone. Everyone. Was it really necessary to have the maid/coworker turn out to be vile, too? Couldn’t Elizabeth have had that one kindness, instead of having to completely rely on Darcy for her emotional needs? And the Gardiners? Child, one does not mess with the Gardiners. Ever.

I read this on-line before publication; went to Amazon to pre-order; received it on my iPad Kindle the other day. I’ve often wondered why more authors have never shown a “finally fed up” Lizzy leaving Longbourn before (or very rarely). To see both her and Darcy together in such with such emotion and disillusionment and coming together without many misunderstandings between them was gratifying. This one totally captured me and I thank you for sharing it.

So glad not to see Caroline Bingley mentioned too much. Wickham was not a big factor between Darcy and Elizabeth. Great story . Always love it when there is an epilogue.

This book is much more true to life (no matter the century you are in) than all of the ‘sunshine and roses’ and HEA’s that are the main offerings in this genre. (Not that I don’t enjoy them) I greatly admire authors who take on difficult and unpopular subject matter in the JAFF world. While the topic is often difficult for some to deal with, I feel that this author has done a good job. Bravo, well done. Can’t think of a more worthy cause.I loved this version of Elizabeth. Her slow awakening to the depth of her feelings for Darcy was heartwarming. That she chose him rather than her family speaks volumns to me. This was the pivotal turning point in their relationship and I literally held my breath fearing that she would make the wrong decision. Wish it was longer.

The asylums and 'nicer places for gentlefolk' (if their loved ones cared enough) were stuffed full of women who had reacted to the sorrows of their lives in similar matters. Although this story is told with much more modern sensibilities, the issues are quite unfortunately timeless. I highly recommend this book. The thought processes could be a bit deep for a younger reader, but the younger the more at risk of some of the very things the book is about. This Darcy is the swoon-worthy hero to the rescue we love him to be. And I agree with another reviewer he was a bit too perfect. I'm on the fence about it being too short. Yes, I did wish for more about their married life. But I can't help thinking that since the book dealt with the realities of the ugliness that life could bring; that overcoming that which Elizabeth had to overcome in order to get to her marriage would realistically have kept popping up and would have had to be dealt with again and again. People with that much damage don't just heal completely overnight. Best to end it where it did end. It does help tremendously having a supportive spouse. But the story is great! It does have a lovely, meaningful ending with the epilogue. So Bravo, Rose Fairbanks. This story, for it's darkness, is a triumph.

Bennet family meltdown. Darcy finds Lizzy working at an inn as a serving girl. This is a manifestation of the entire Bennet and Gardiner families imploding.Or did they? At one point Lizzy tells Darcy that she ‘had’ to leave before she lost her mind. And for the rest of the book Lizzy reacts to Darcy as if she has had a mental trauma impact herself. It wasn’t until the epilogue that I believed her stories totally. First time in a long time an author kept me guessing until the end.I recommend this book.
