Really captures the essence of India, and the Bengal Lancers in the early years of the 20th Century. You probably haven't read anything quite like this. The author was a British officer in the Bengal Lancers and the vignettes related in this book cover pretty much all of the aspects of what his life was like. The author was an astute observer, unlike many who saw India as a land of filth and squalor, he looked beyond the more obvious and was intrigued with the spiritualism and philosophy of the people. Much of the book covers his attempts to gain a better insight into the mysticism of the East.The overall impression I have is an intimate portrait of a time gone by, a snapshot as it were, of the lives of a Bengal Lancer set amidst the backdrop of the teeming multitudes of India in the early years of the 20th Century. A story vividly drawn from the pen of a man who lived that life.
Don't be fooled. This, beyond the title, has almost nothing to do with the classic film of the same name. Instead, it's a detailed view of one man's experience in a world that is long gone, but who's echoes are still rattling through the modern world.
This book sounded really exciting - "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer" - An 1930 autobiography by a British Calvary Officer in India - I was looking for an adventure story - Hoping for a book as good as Beryl Markham's memoir "West With the Night" ( published in 1942 ) - However "Bengal Lancer" was kind of a "dud" - Oh well - Only a few $ ventured - We tried ( big smile )Regards,daryl maynard

Francis Yeats-Brown is a facinating man. He was portrayed on film in 1935 by Gary Cooper, in a film which is entertaining, but scarcely scratches the surface of the real character as this very readable account does.
Don’t expect an exciting read. The book was a compicated to read boor.
