Joan Rough unlayers the traumas all families heap upon each other, consciously or not-- that inevitably boil back to the surface during an impeding death. Feelings of inadequacy, of disappointment, of rage, of despair that we all try to keep locked inside jump around like a jack in the box. This book is a must read for anyone going through end of life dilemmas-- if only so they know that their loss is not unique and that others are going through it, have gone through it and will go through it. It should be included in the waiting room of every hospice care center.I met the author at the 2017 Gaithersburg Book Festival and had her sign a copy of the book to my mother.
This was not an easy book to read, but it was a worthy one. This is a consistently well-written memoir with occasional incursions of beautiful, almost poetic, prose about a very painful subject: the continuing abuse of a daughter, now a mature woman, by a mother she is caring for through to death. I felt enormous empathy for the author who seemed to struggle her whole life for a little bit of peace, beauty and joy that it is clear she wholly deserved. Owning that understanding -- that she deserved it -- is her central therapeutic work and she takes the reader along with her as she learns to embrace her worthiness.Mountain Keeper
While I am not facing the imminent death of my mother,like the author, this book is a must read for anyone with a complex mother daughter relationship. There were countless moments where I could relate fully and I know this book is something I will pull references from as that relationship goes down the inevitable road.
When this kind of honesty is put into words, only thing you can do is cry. Joan's easy style deceives the depth of her journey to wholeness through the challenges of care-taking her very recalcitrant mother! Joan even got to the bottom of this which made her way to deep, deep family forgiveness. The kind of forgiveness that transcends generations. New paths are found for her and my family to celebrate being family. Thank you Joan for putting your journey into words. Now there is encouragement for us to find the way to heal our wounds!
This was a good memoir I could relate to. The author had a physically abusive childhood and then had an emotional and psychological abusive adulthood caring for her mother. It is a story of hatred, love, loss and letting go.
This book is not unlike one I am writing, yet so different. I love that the author learned to love herself and found the realness of forgiveness. Letting go of an abusive childhood brings about a new person. She walked us do we her path with kindness. Thank you.
An honest and insightful account of a daughter's experience as she cares for narcissistic and abusive mother in her last years of life. Rough holds nothing back, making it a terrific read for those going through similar situations. Readers will appreciate the uplifting ending.

I am inspired to continue writing my Memoir after reading yours, especially because I also have family issues which is why I've​ put my Memoir on the back burner. I appreciated your clear and concise writing style so much. You drew me in with every chapter and I felt your pain. I also loved your willingness to honestly look at yourself and your anxieties, PTSD issues etc. and in the end your forgiveness was commendable.
