Sitting Bull: His Life and Legacy, by Ernie LaPointe

From the Inside Flap

Sitting Bull HIS LIFE AND LEGACY Never before has the story of Sitting Bull been written and published by a lineal descendant. In Sitting Bull: His Life and Legacy, Ernie LaPointe, a great-grandson of the famous Hunkpapa Lakota chief, presents the family tales and memories told to him about his great-grandfather. LaPointe not only recounts the rich oral history of his family-the stories of Sitting Bull's childhood, his reputation as a fierce warrior, his growth into a sage and devoted leader of his people, and the betrayal that led to his murder-but also explains what it means to be Lakota in the time of Sitting Bull and now. In many ways the oral history differs from what has become the standard and widely accepted biography of Sitting Bull. LaPointe explains the discrepancies, how they occurred, and why he wants to tell his story of Tatanka Iyotake. This book is powerful. It is a story of Native American history, told by a Native American, for all people to better understand a culture, a leader, and a man. ERNIE LAPOINTE, a great-grandson of Sitting Bull, was born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He is a Sun Dancer who lives the traditional way of the Lakota and follows the rules of the sacred pipe. LaPointe and his wife, Sonja, live in South Dakota.

I wanted to like this book because I really think oral histories are so important and as a part of indigenous people's history they are especially important because they not only give a history but give insight into culture, religion, familial relationships, and values. But this particular history wAs an undisguised attempt air proving a direct blood line with Sitting Bull and arguing against the value of the line from Sitting Bull's nephew. From the opening pages the story is told that this is a book that comes from generations old rivalry between these two parts of Sitting Bull's family.I recently read an oral history of Crazy Horse by Joseph Marshall which was a much better insight into Lakota Sioux history and culture without the underlying motivation of family rivalry that is here in this book. While I sympathize with the case that the author is trying make I wish it wasn't couched in an attempt at bring the oral history of Tatanka Iyotake (Sitting Bull) forward.

Tatanka Iyotake was one of the greatest Lakota Nation patriots and heroes of all times, standing up for his people's freedom, the right to live according to their culture and practice their religion.Historians not directly related to Sitting Bull's family could never have given previously unknown nuances to this valuable account of Tatanka Iyotake's life as his great-grandson Mr. La Pointe so eloquently does in this publication.Heartbreaking is the fact that the lineal descendants of the great Lakota leader to this day have been denied to properly bury his remains in a location that would provide a dignified resting place worthy of Tatanka Iyotake. This book is a MUST READ. Congratulations to Mr. La Pointe on this eye-opening, revealing historical work. I wish him and his family all the best in their future endeavors.Heide GulgowskiPrincely/Ducal House Gulgowski-Doliwa

What a dark and awful time in the history of this continent. It is devastating to me what was lost. I am very grateful to Ernie and those who supported him as he allowed the oral narrative to be told (written). So many have sought answers, but those who know usually stay silent. Not this time. May the history reflect the greatness of Tatanka Iyotake.

Many white people, including myself, are ignorant of Native American ways and the nature of Native American people. I wish I could sit with Mr. LaPointe and learn more about his great grandfather and the Lakota ways. I would like to shake Mr. LaPointe's hand and thank him for opening my eyes to he wrongs done to the Lakota people...and ALL Native Americans.Tatanka Iyotake was a great man with integrity, a trait sorely lacking among most white "leaders" of today. As I get older, I become more ashamed of my white race; power and money are what the white race seems to strive for, including the so called "religious" leaders.Thank you again, Mr. LaPointe, for writing this fine book.Larry Butterton

Great to hear the perspective of someone in Sitting Bull's family. Very well written.

This short, insightful biography of the great Hunkpapa Lakota chief commonly known as Sitting Bull greatly increased my knowledge of the man's influence. He was a holy man who was a force for good, and his great-grandson, author Ernie LaPointe, does a wonderful job of clearing up misunderstandings about his famous relative. A must-read for anyone interested in Native American lore. It intrigued me to find out that Sitting Bull did not kill General Custer, as had been falsely reported through the years; he was on the sidelines at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He is also famous for adopting American sharpshooter Annie Oakley who reminded me of his daughter, Walks Looking.

I really thought this book would be a more in depth look at his life but it was quite vague and skimed overa lot of the major events in his life. A short bio for someone entrusted to get the story right. It's not a bad read , just expect more.

I loved this book. It was very informative. I learned so much! I felt that the oral traditions and history handed down through several generations and then put into written form by one of Sitting Bull's descendants really made such a difference! It was like I was there witnessing everything that happened. I really enjoyed it. Before reading this book, I knew very little about the Lakotas, but had traveled in the general area where they had lived. I wanted to learn more. This was a real eye-opener and has certainly caused me to have great respect for Sitting Bull and his people. A must to read!
