I really enjoyed this book with its descriptive writing and accurate portrayal of the time. This book takes place in the 1920 at a tuberculosis sanitarium which actually existed in this time period)in Kentucky. The man character, Wolfgang, is a doctor who wishes to return to studying for the priesthood but feels that he needs to help with the tuberculosis epidemic first. He also strongly believes that music is healing--playing instruments for his patients as well as forming a choir against the head doctor's support for any of his uses of music. This book is also about his faith, his relationships throughout his life (with his parents, his wife, the patients, co-workers, his love/use of music, and racism. This would have been 5 stars for me except that I felt the story (for me) didn't always flow from chapter to chapter when there would be a shift from present to past as Wolfgang would begin to remember pasts events and relationships in his life. There was just a shift and you would get it by reading but I felt that having a chapter heading or even just there being a year at the beginning of the chapter would have helped the flow. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and the difference between 4 and 5 stars for me is just slight and probably a personal preference issue. There are many thought-provoking discussion questions at the end making it suitable for book clubs.

Takes place in a TB Hospital in Kentucky in early 20th century. The story is fictional, however there was such a place as this. I was spellbound by the characters and the situations. When I was young, I heard a lot about TB but never really understood the disease. I always thought you were doomed and went away to die, never to see your loved ones again. This story reveals that isn't always the case. It takes very special people to staff a facility like Waverly Hills. I was impressed as to how the author, James Market, managed to dispell rumors about TB and touched on people's predgidous attitudes towards the negro race. Thankfully those attitudes have changed for the better.A wonderful story to read. I highly recommend it for your library.

As a resident of Southern Louisville for over 25 years and a Waverly Hospital enthusiast, I can vouch for the authenticity of the historical details of this book. The integration of the true facts surrounding the TB hospital with a well-developed fictional story make for a compelling read. Other historical information included in this book, such as, the infamous gangster activity located at the luxurious Seelbach Hotel, the resurgence of the KKK during prohibition and treatments available to TB patients during that time period, all establish this as a well-researched work of historical fiction. I highly recommend this book.

I really liked this book. It told so many interesting facts about Waverly Hills and the treatment of tuberculosis. The fictional story of Wolfgang Pike and his use of music in treating patients was very entertaining.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing was good, plot was very interesting as were the characters and I always enjoy learning something about pieces of history. Have loaned out the book to several friends and they all have enjoyed it! Can't recommend this book enough!

Bought this book since I am getting ready to tour waverly. It was a pretty decent story about the TB hospital. It mentions rooms 502 frequently. A really good story line.

The story draws you in from the beginning. I always looked at Waverly Hills as be nothing short of a place of torture and suffering, not realizing that for the time period it was a state of the art hospital. The little extra side stories with Clergy, KKK, and Al Capone added to help remind the reader of the time period and how people thought and acted. Overall, it was one of the best books I ever read and is in the same caliber of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Oliver Twist". Historically accurate but not boring or dull. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Waverly Hills, past medical treatments, or are just looking for a rewarding story.

I am an avid reader. Sometimes when I look for books on Amazon, I think what I'm really looking for is the meaning of life. This book has a lot to say about that. It says it with some gorgeous passages of writing. I love the time. I love the characters.I love the setting. It is extremely rare for me to reread a book, but I want to experience this one again. Did I say I love this book yet?
