I somehow ended up with book two of this series in my library and decided I needed to read book one first. The title of the second book, Lowcountry Stranger, was all it took to draw me in. The lowcountry of South Carolina is my favorite place in the world. Ms. Farley describes it in such detail that I felt like I was on East Bay Street headed for the Battery and White Point Gardens again. I just wanted to read about my favorite place, but I was in for an added bonus. The Sweeney family story is an incredible one...a must read. The sisters with their history and their separate lives and their interdependence....I laughed, I cried, and I was so glad I purchased this book! Some people may read it and think it absurd that one family can have so many terrible things happen at once, but I have been there, done that, and was happy to read a happy ending. I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book in the series!
I received this book as a gift. Not having been familiar with the author, I put off reading this book for a few months. Now I am sorry that I did so. This novel explores a family filled with flaws, but yet endearing. All three of the Sweeney sisters have their own problems and the book explores them individually and together because the problems affect each of them. There is suspense and a mystery to be solved involving a key. The writing is detailed and one becomes involved with the characters, rooting for them to solve the riddle. The criminal in the book is recognizable almost immediately, but that doesn't take away the suspense. One keeps wondering what he will do next and who will suffer at his hands. All in all this is a book that you won't want to put down and will leave you wanting to read more from this author.
Having two sisters myself, I could relate to the various interactions among the three Sweeney sisters. The characters present realistic struggles in one's adult life--marital problems, spousal abuse, a disabled child responding to trauma, an injured child, a tendency toward alcoholism, work issues, emotional issues, a parent with potential dementia, etc. Each of the sisters has to draw close to family members to successfully survive life's crises. Various friends and family members come to the rescue and provide support for the three sisters as the police try to apprehend a violent character in the story, thus providing suspense and intrigue. Several romances develop during the course of the novel. Tanya Eby skillfully performed the reading of the novel on the MP3 CD.
The book description and other reviewers make this out to be a light story about three sisters and their families, an easy beach read. So I was a little surprised when one of the sisters points a shotgun at her husband and racks in the round to show him she did know how to load the gun and she was (supposedly) serious about her demands that he not put their daughter in danger again. I quit reading after the husband assaults her in front of the daughter and she backs down. I can’t abide by parents who allow their children to witness violence in the home, especially between the people who are supposed to be protecting them. How can you profess to love your child when you allow them to be terrified of their parents behavior?
This book is about love, family, and the lengths to which they are willing to go to hide their shortcomings from one another. Like a person who stumbles and falls, but jumps back up with total disregard for any injuries sustained, each family member would rather suffer through their issues than admit to the problems. Jackie (the oldest) is so caught up in her need to have the "perfect" life, she cannot admit it's falling apart Sam (the middle child) has become the peacemaker and attempts to shoulder everyone's problems as well as her own until the weight of responsibility overwhelms her. Faith is the youngest and cannot admit to a failed marriage, almost allowing herself to be crushed beneath the weight of an abusive husband. Finally there's the girl's mother (Lovie) who has been acting a little strange and adding pressure to each of her daughters' problems.I purchased this book because I've lived in South Carolina all my life and love the coastal area. As I read, I realized the author wasn't just creating an imaginary place, she knew the area. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good summer read.
