Our family is a Whole Food Plant Based family. I am married to a family physician who teaches his patients about this life saving eating lifestyle. We are always on the lookout for GOOD recipes to share with patients. Dreena Burton has done a fantastic job creating recipes for this cookbook for Dr Barnard. I have tried a number of these recipes. This is a 5 star choice. (Plant Based Families is also an excellent choice) This cookbook however is better for those who are avoiding oils that are not in their original packaging ( i.e. choosing to eat olives in preference to olive oil or whole nuts instead of nut oils.) The recipes I have tried and really enjoyed are: Lentil Minestrone - sturdy stew-like. Pizza, Pizza - delicious; Orange Tofu - easy and fabulous with the Coconut Rice and Broiled Asparagus; Rad Thai! - over the top good. I used Barilla thin spaghetti with it. Soft-Baked Tamari Tofu - YES; - I press it first in a press, dice into 1/2" cubes and toss in the tamari. Jamaican Stew - great! I used sweet potatoes instead of plantain. The Thai Corn and Sweet Potato Stew is fantastic. I served it with brown rice on the side. If I double it I will use 1/2 tofu and 1/2 black beans. Twice the tofu would be too much and the beans would add to it already amazing rainbow of colors. Wow.
I purchased this book for my sister a few months ago. She has been eating plant based for about 2 months now, but this book has also helped with her sugars. Her fasting blood sugar continues to improve! This lifestyle is truly the greatest for diabetics. Would recommend!
The recipes are easy to follow, the ingredients are mostly easy to find, and as someone who is a newbie to vegan cooking, I found the recipes to be quite tasty. The lemon pineapple muffins are a good place to start, and many of the bean recipes (for entrees) are also super easy. My energy level was better after about a week. I don’t have diabetes, but an autoimmune disease, and have read that this type of diet will help me as well.
Thank you. I bought this for a friend of my husband (male) who took my advice and has taken up plant based eating. He is no longer on insulin, weight loss, etc, etc. Makes him very happy and makes me happy too. The advice was actually from the two books I gave him -- one by Dr Bernard and one by Dr McDougall.
Everything Dr. Barnard writes is worth reading. Period. Doctors like him (Esselstyn, McDougall, Campbell, Popper, etc.) are revolutionizing medicine. I dearly hope to live to see the day when our society has truly embraced the nutrition-based health philosophy of these medical pioneers, and by following their wisdom, I undoubtedly will!
Having just received my copy yesterday I dug right in and tried the Cauli-Curry Bean Soup - AMAZING - FLAVOR GALORE! I cannot wait to work my way through the entire cookbook. This is an excellent addition to any kitchen library.
Just got the book the other day and have already made 4 recipes! All of them were easy and delicious. The miso rice cakes were to die for with the mango hemp sauce over arugula--and my husband, who is not a whole food plant based enthusiast, said they were a 10. The beautiful photography is such an asset and appetite boost. Thank you so much to Dreena and Dr. Barnard for this amazing addition to my kitchen library which I know will be stained and worn out soon!
Awesome easy to make recipes, creative and full of flavor. I’m not a diabetic, I purchased this book for the healthful recipes and so far every recipe I have made has been a slam dunk. Dreena Burton is a genius in the kitchen.
